Yoga weekend in Catania, Sicily!
During this long weekend there'll be 3 mixed ability yoga classes, time to explore the wonderful Baroque city of Catania and we'll be taken on an adventure up the majestic Mount Etna volcano!
DATES TO BE CONFIRMED FOR 2019
Catania is situated on the Ionian Sea and is Sicily’s second largest city sitting under the formidable shadow of Mount Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano! On several occasions volcanic eruptions destroyed the city, the most devastating of which happened in the 17th Century. In 1669 Catania was covered in lava and then, just 24 years later in 1693 an earthquake shook the town down to its foundations.
Now rebuilt in the Baroque style of that period it is a delight to visit with the old town centre being quite small to navigate and an ideal place to start your explorations in the Piazza Duomo.
The Cathedral, dedicated to St. Agata, the city’s patron saint, stands on the site of an 11th Century church that was almost entirely destroyed in the 1693 eruption. Its replacement is a very impressive, imposing Baroque structure that incorporates some Roman columns taken from the amphitheatre.
In the centre stands the city’s symbol, a lava elephant fountain carrying an obelisk. It bears an enigmatic inscription, MSSHDEPL, which according to some is an acronym for “The mind of St. Agata is sane and spontaneous, honouring God and liberating the city”.
The old fortress of Castello Ursino is an imposing structure built by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen in the 13th century on a rocky cliff overlooking the sea. However, the massive lava spill of the 1669 eruption pushed the sea back, creating in one fail swoop a new coastline and stripping Castello Ursino of its strategic position.
The Roman amphitheatre, in Via Vittorio Emanuele, not far from our B&B, was built on the site of a Greek theatre in the 2nd Century AD. A fascinating warren of passages runs underneath it, bringing to mind its more famous cousin, the Colosseum.
THE VENUE, LOCATION & ACCOMMODATION
We'll be staying at the gorgeous Asmundo di Gisari luxury B&B in central Catania, within 5 minutes walk of the famous food market. We have reserved their beautiful apartment which is furnished with stunning antique furniture. As you enter the apartment, which includes a sumptuous sitting room and private dining area, you'll be blown away by the decorations and furnishings. Each double bedroom has it's own spacious ensuite bathroom. We also have private access to the two lovely rooftop terraces where the yoga classes will take place.
Day 1 FRIDAY:
We’ll settle into our accommodation and then have an evening yoga practice to stretch out after the travelling. Nibbles and refreshing drinks on the rooftop terrace (weather permitting!) at the venue before we head off for dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2 SATURDAY:
The morning (9am) will start with a yoga practice to set us up for the day’s activities. After a leisurely brunch it’s time to explore the city! How’s about starting with the local food market - a real foodies delight. Be tempted by one of the typical Sicilian street foods! Then explore the nearby Roman amphitheatre, the castle, maybe do some shopping......
Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Day 3 SUNDAY:
We'll start the day again with yoga then breakfast before being picked up for our trip to Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe! We'll be picked up and taken close to the summit before taking the cable car with our guide to explore.
Whilst we're exploring Etna our private chef will be preparing a feast for dinner: 4 courses with wine/soft drinks. Meat/fish eaters and vegans and vegetarians can be catered for.

Our Sunday night dinner will be chef prepared at the B&B so again please inform us of any dietary requirements.
There are many airlines that fly into Catania including Easyjet, Ryanair, British Airways and Alitalia. Transfers are super easy into the city centre from the aiport. There’s the bus that takes about 30 minutes and you’re dropped very close to the main square which is a 5 minute walk to the B&B.
